In May of 2019 Braxton Landburg was diagnosed with a rare and incurable cancer called DIPG. Not knowing how or what we could do to help, I remembered a friend of mine Larry Baker, owner of the Catoosa Kwik Lube, mentioned he had planned to one day host a car show and I pitched the idea to him, and he immediately was on board without hesitation. With the venue secure, a date was set, and the show was a go! Within just a few short months a group of friends and car enthusiasts were able to put together the best car show in Oklahoma called Burn Out On 66!
I knew the car show needed to be unique to draw a crowd and with Larry’s background in drag racing, I thought why not end the show with a burn out contest. Going to many car shows in the past, I also knew we needed to do something different. We pride ourselves on custom handmade trophies as well as how we pick our overall winner. The beneficiary is escorted around the entire property with instructions to pick their favorite car and the vehicle they pick will be the one who wins best of show! Knowing it takes money to raise money, I began going around town with nothing but a flyer and sponsorship form asking for donations. The immediate community support was nothing short of amazing. Here I was a stranger holding a piece of paper with nothing but a story and a promise to do what I said I was going to do with their donation.
Our first show in 2019 went off without a hitch. We had an impressive turn out of participants, spectators, and volunteers! In 2022 we elected a board and became an official 501(c)(3) as the Burn Out On 66 Foundation.
I want to give a special shout out to my wife Sarah for going along with the crazy idea from the start as well as Catoosa Kwik Lube owner Larry Baker and his staff, The Stegall family, Callahan family, Baker family, Landburg family, Tim Cox, Light of Hope director Nancy Phelps, and the countless other volunteers. These special people are the reason my idea to do something good came to fruition. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
